Encouraging Independence:
Jennifer Kessel, Manager, St. Catherine Commons

After completing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling, Jennifer Kessel began her career in senior care in 1997. Over 9 years later, she is a seasoned and caring professional and a valuable asset to St. Catherine Commons. One important aspect of Jennifer's management philosophy is her encouragement of resident independence.

In previous phases of Jennifer's career she worked with seniors in assisted living venues. Her move to St. Catherine Commons is especially welcome to her because of the independence she can encourage in residents.

"I love to see our residents get out there and do things." Jennifer explains. "I tell them now that they are free of responsibilities like mowing the lawn or shoveling snow they can enjoy more fun and social activities. I try to express the idea that those who stay active and independent are more likely to remain active and independent."

Good Neighbors
One special facet of the independent lifestyle at St. Catherine Commons is the community of neighbors made up of the residents. Jennifer explains:

"Residents are great neighbors to each other. They make sure that thing are going well with their friends in the building. They constantly check on each other. They walk the halls for exercise and they know when their neighbors take in their paper, or when they're on vacation. They care about each other and help each other remain independent. They greet new residents with bakery and invite them to activities. That really breaks the ice for new people at St. Catherine's."

Hands On
Even though Jennifer encourages independence in her residents, her management style could best be described as "hands on." She is quick to assist her residents with any need they may have. In a day she may change a few light bulbs, replace batteries in smoke detectors, help a resident hang a new picture or position a new piece of furniture. "It's not my job" is definitely not in her vocabulary. The residents in turn repay her with their company, their warm conversation…and their bakery! Jennifer explains:

"Residents love to make the staff baked goods, and they're all such wonderful bakers. We try to restrain ourselves and not over-indulge, but of course a short time later the plate is empty!"

Summer Fun
One of the special amenities of the St. Catherine Commons lifestyle is the proximity to the Pennoyer Park, just across 7th avenue from the facility and smack dab on the lakefront. The Pennoyer Park bandshell hosts concerts each Wednesday and Thursday evening in the summer. St. Catherine Commons has been a sponsor for several of these concerts and offers free parking for other Kenosha-area residents who drive in to see the shows. As Jennifer says:

"It's a great way for our residents to see and meet other members of the surrounding community. They love to meet and talk with the people who come to the concerts. These events are very family and senior focused. Our residents especially enjoy the Kenosha Pops band."

Residents also love to get together and take in a on-site movie matinee or enjoy a meeting of the card club. Staying active helps residents preserve their independence. Jennifer explains:

"Any activity we post fills up right away. Our resident enjoy their independence by staying active."
