A Salute for Your Service
Capri Senior Communities is proud of our many veterans and very thankful for their dedicated service. Two Capri Communities residents shared their stories and experiences with us.
Summit Woods resident Fred D. (below, left), who served in the Navy in the Landing Craft Infantry during World War II, went on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He enjoyed looking at the different memorials in Washington, D.C., and sharing time with his son Richard (pictured with Fred). On the flight home, Fred received a package of letters from friends and family. "They were simulating mail call from our days of service," he explained. "Sometimes it was a month or more between mail calls."
Fred met his wife Bernadine while training to be an electrician in Minneapolis. The Navy arranged for him to receive training at the University of Minnesota before serving overseas. He proposed before leaving Minnesota and arranged for Bernadine to come to Galveston, Texas, before leaving for the South Pacific for 20 years.
