Casa del Maré installs memory stations
Casa del Maré Memory Care, Capri's community for seniors with Alzheimer's and other dementias at St. Catherine Commons in Kenosha, installed several memory care stations for its residents. These memory stations, or life skill stations, encourage residents to reminisce about past life experiences and stay engaged mentally and physically.
"I have seen firsthand how these memory stations have helped residents," said Meghan Davis, Capri's Director of Lifestyle Enrichment. "Residents feel comfortable, productive, and happy when they are able to do tasks they were used to doing in their lives. A resident who is feeling anxious or agitated might find it calming to dress a baby doll in the nursery to evoke memories of parenthood or sort tools in a tool box to reminisce about fixing things around the home or at work."
Memory stations are tailored to the generations that live in Capri's Memory Care communities. Many have a nursery to prompt memories of parenthood, an office with vintage furniture to help residents reminisce about their time at work, a military station with pins and photos to prompt memories of men and women serving their country, and a sports station with vintage memorabilia celebrating local teams. "The laundry memory stations are also very popular with residents as they enjoy the familiar tasks of folding towels and sorting socks," said Davis.
